BERLIN—German police are investigating a series of apparently deliberate crashes on a Berlin highway as a possible act of terror, authorities said Wednesday.
Police overpowered and detained a 30-year-old Iraqi-born man Tuesday night, after he allegedly rammed his car into several vehicles on the A100 highway that bisects the German capital, police spokeswoman, Patricia Bremer, said.
After coming to a stop, the suspect said that his car contained a dangerous substance, police said. A search of the vehicle found only work tools.
The crashes, which police believe were deliberate, left six people wounded, three seriously, Berlin’s firefighting department said on Wednesday. Some 300 people who were stranded on the highway as a result had to leave on foot.
The antiterror section of the Berlin state police is now in charge of the investigation, police said.
