Google Confirms New Pixel Fold Coming At Its Pixel 9 Launch in August

Google has revealed that the Pixel 9 launch event on August 13 will kick off at 10am PT, which is around a month ahead of when we expect Apple’s iPhone 16 to launch. The Pixel 9, will include the Pixel 9 Pro Fold — the name of its next foldable, though it’s unclear how much more “pro” it will be than the first Pixel Fold.

Google revealed the Pixel 9 launch time via a post on X (formerly Twitter), which also included a word search filled with “reasons you should break up with your phone.” (At a glance, the words I can find are “screenshots,” “email,” “cost” and “pogs.”)

The event invite specifically named the Pixel 9 Pro, with a link to a site that only mentioned that phone and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This confirms rumors that Google had been working on another rich version of its foldable, the Google Pixel Fold, which launched in June 2023 — presumably, with the Pro appended to its title, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be more feature-rich than its folding predecessor.

There’s no mention of the standard Pixel 9 in the post, but it would be curious if Google didn’t also release it on the same date. Presumably, Google simply wants to hype up its flagship phone ahead of its launch.

Regardless, the photos on Google’s site show a different look for the Pixel 9 family. The back-spanning “visor” look carried form the Pixel 6 has been retired in favor of a wide pill-shaped camera block containing three cameras that simply sticks out from the back of the phone. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a total of four cameras split between two rows, though its camera block is also rounded.

To top it off, the sides of the Pixel 9 Pro are flat, much like the last years of iPhones have been, moving on from the rounded edges of previous Pixel phones. While we can’t see the sides of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, it looks similar in appearance to the Pixel 9 Pro  — though the rounded edges of the cover screen are more pronounced, making it look nestled into the metal frame in a way that the Pixel Fold hid with a layer of black between the screen and the hinge.

Google tends to tease its own products before their release, so this isn’t too surprising to see their new phones ahead of the August 13 launch day — but we’ll have to wait and see whether any other devices will also be revealed next month.
