After Maharashtra, highly transmissible BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron detected in Delhi – Top Updates

Coronavirus June 28 Latest News: India on Tuesday witnessed drop in daily Covid cases after the sharp spike on Monday a day earlier. The government data says that the country detected 11,793 fresh Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours. There was a minute increase in the coronavirus deaths today. India officially recorded 27 Covid-19 fatalities on Tuesday. However, the biggest spike was in terms of the active case count. With more than 2,000 new infections in the span of one day, India has now 96,700 active Covid cases, the health bulletin says. While the national recovery rate stands at 98.57 per cent, the ministry records say.

Meanwhile, several nations around the globe are bringing back the mask mandate amid surging Covid cases. Pakistan has reintroduced face masks in flights whereas France has made it mandatory for people to wear face masks while using public transport. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is set to introduce new stringent measures t curb fresh outbreaks. Capital Pyongyang is battling torrential rains as well as the pandemic. The weather conditions are making it difficult for health workers to reach out to people in need.

In other related development, a PTI report says that latest samples collected in Delhi have shown the presence of the BA.5 variant of Omicron, which is very transmissible in nature. The report says that the sample, which were collected between May and June 16, confirmed that the new strain of Omicron in circulating in Delhi. This critical update was also discussed during the meeting of Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium, the PTI report added. It should be noted that Delhi-NCR has been witnessing steady rise in Covid-19 infections since beginning of June.
