Rain, fierce storm batter Thrissur on Tuesday: damage estimated at ₹1.66 crore

Thrissur district faced widespread destruction on Tuesday evening as torrential rain and strong wind wreaked havoc, with the cost of damages estimated at ₹1.66 crore (₹1,66,77,000).

The worst-hit area was Pullazhi, where District Collector Arjun Pandian visited homes and roads severely affected by fallen trees and ruptured electricity poles. A key stretch — Olari Kottil Road — was badly damaged, with uprooted trees and broken branches brought by the storm snapping power lines and completely destroying roofs of several houses.

Thrissur taluk was the worst hit, while specific localities such as Ollur, Ayyanthole, Marathakkara, Aranattukara, and Ollukkara also reported significant damages.

In Thrissur taluk, one house was fully destroyed and 47 others partially damaged, amounting to a loss of ₹23 lakh. Meanwhile, crop loss across Ollukkara, Anthikkad, and Vellangallur blocks affected 126 farmers, wiping out 5.97 hectares of farmland and resulting in damages worth ₹17.86 lakh.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) circles in Thrissur and Irinjalakuda also bore the brunt of the storm, suffering infrastructure damages estimated at ₹1.13 crore.

District officials including Thrissur taluk tahsildar T. Jayasree and village officer Sheeja Raj joined the District Collector during the site inspections, closely assessing the extent of destruction and planning recovery measures.
