Pothundi twin murder: Nenmara SHO suspended

Mahendra Simhan M., inspector of police in charge of Nenmara police station, was suspended from service on Tuesday following an outrage in the wake of the twin murder committed by Chenthamara, a murder accused released on bail, at Pothundi, near Nenmara, in the district.

Mr. Simhan’s suspension followed a damning report against him by District Police Chief V. Ajit Kumar. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Manoj Abraham had sought a report from the District Police Chief about the failure of the police in acting against Chenthamara even after he violated the bail conditions and a complaint was filed against him.

Mr. Ajit Kumar, in his report, said that Mr. Simhan had failed to take action against Chenthamara even when he violated the bail condition by staying in Nenmara for over a month after being released on bail. The court had released Chenthamara on bail on condition that he would not enter Nenmara police station limits.

Sudhakaran, whom Chenthamara murdered along with his mother Lakshmi on Monday, had complained to Mr. Simhan that Chenthamara was staying in his house in Nenmara and that he faced a threat on his life. But the police did not act against Chenthamara, said Mr. Ajit Kumar in his report.

Mr. Simhan’s failure in informing the court about Chenthamara violating the bail condition also has found a mention in the District Police Chief’s report. Although Mr. Simhan justified saying that he had not received a copy of the bail order, the District Police Chief rejected this claim.

Meanwhile, the police continued a massive hunt for Chenthamara, who escaped into the forest after committing the twin murder on Monday morning. Different police squads, including an anti-Naxal team, continued their search for the accused in Palakkad and neighbouring places on Tuesday.

Threat to neighbours

Sudhakaran’s daughter Akhila said that Chenthamara killed her father, mother and grandmother out of superstition. “There’s no other reason for his spite against us. If he is not caught, he will kill us also,” she said.

Their neighbour Pushpa said that Chenthamara was a victim of extreme superstitions. He was reportedly guided by an occultist from Thrissur in the murder of Sudhakaran’s wife Sajita in 2019. He reportedly believed that his neighbours with long hair were responsible for his wife leaving him.

Pushpa said that Chenthamara had believed that he gained supernatural powers after killing Sajita. “He wears several kinds of amulets on his body. He once told his friends that he would kill at least five people,” she said.
