Mehul Choksi, the absconding diamond trader, is unlikely to come to India at-least for next one month, sources said. The diamantaire, who is facing his possible deportation to India, is being heard by two courts of Dominica in two separate matters. Sources say, till the time both the cases are not settled, Mehul Choksi won’t be deported to India.
In one of the cases filed by Mehul Choksi, the High Court has to decide if Mehul Choksi was arrested illegally by the Dominican Police and to which country he should be sent back. In another case, the Magistrate Court is hearing the matter of Mehul Choksi’s alleged illegal entry into their country.
Officials familiar with the matter told India Today TV that till the time courts decide on both the matters, Mehul Choksi’s deportation to India is almost impossible.
On Thursday, the Dominican High Court adjourned businessman Mehul Choksi’s case hearing to complete the pleadings. The next hearing date has not been fixed yet but is likely to take place around July 1.
Just before the matter was adjourned, the Ministry of External Affairs said that India is committed to get Mehul Choksi from Dominica.
In the meantime, both sides will decide on the pleadings and arguments. Mehul Choksi will, however, remain in Dominican Police custody.
In the other case, which is being heard by the magistrates court, the matter will be heard on June 14 and order, in that case, is likely to come later.
To delay the matter further, the lawyers of Mehul Choksi are expected to file bail plea of Choksi before the Dominican High Court.
Mehul Choksi was denied bail on the charges of ‘illegal entry’ by the Dominican Magistrate Court on Wednesday.
India’s eight member team is still in Dominica and it is not clear of the officials will be returning soon or will stay in Dominica till legal cases are over.
