Gangster Vikas Dubey, wanted in the killing of eight policemen in Kanpur, was arrested from a temple in Ujjain on Thursday morning.
High drama unfolded at the Mahakal temple after the wanted gangster, who had been absconding for nearly a week after the ambush on a police party in his village, was arrested from Ujjain.
“Main Vikas Dubey hun, Kanpur wala (I am Vikas Dubey from Kanpur],” screamed the Uttar Pradesh gangster.
This reportedly alerted security guards at the Ujjain temple who then alerted the police. As policemen walked him towards a police car, Vikas Dubey shouts again, “Main Vikas Dubey hun, Kanpur wala“.
“Vikas Dubey was going to Ujjain Mahakal temple when he was identified by security personnel. Police were informed, he confessed his identity after being pushed for it. He has been apprehended by police & interrogation is underway,” Ashish Singh, Ujjain Collector said.

Vikas Dubey escaped from his hideout in Faridabad on Wednesday where police caught three of his accomplices.
Vikas Dubey feared being killed in an encounter as police were deployed in court complexes and Noida’s news TV hub. Vikas Dubey, however, gave police the slip and landed in Madhya Pradesh. According to sources, Vikay Dubey let the police know about his location in Ujjain following which the Madhya Pradesh Police arrested him.
A senior MP government official told PTI, “Yes, he has been arrested.” Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra also told reporters that Dubey is in state police custody in Ujjain.
Vikas Dubey could be later handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police later once a court approves a transit remand. After the Ujjain local court gives the police a transit remand, Vikas will be taken to Kanpur.
2 aides of gangster Vikas Dubey killed in encounters
Two aides of gangster Vikas Dubey were gunned down in separate encounters in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, police said. While Prabhat was killed in Kanpur when he tried to flee from police custody, another aide of Vikas Dubey, Praveen alias Bauwa Dubey, was shot dead in an encounter in Etawah, they added.
“The encounter took place in the Panki area of Kanpur when a police team was bringing Kartikeya alias Prabhat from Faridabad to Kanpur on transit remand. The police vehicle had a flat tyre. Taking advantage of the situation, he tried to flee after snatching the pistol of a policeman,” he said.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors, the ADG said.
The police recovered four pistols, including two taken away after last week’s ambush in Kanpur’s Bikru village in which eight policemen were killed, and 44 live cartridges from the trio.
Another associate of Vikas Dubey, wanted in connection with last week’s Kanpur ambush, was killed in an encounter in Etawah, the police said.
