Kanpur encounter: Role of 200 cops under scanner over links with Vikas Dubey, phone records being checked

Over 200 policemen have come under the scanner over the sensational Kanpur encounter that turned into an ambush against the police team resulting in the killings of 8 policemen.

Police personnel at the Chaubeypur police station along with several other stations in the area are on the radar as investigators look into their possible involvement with gangster Vikas Dubey.

Meanwhile, 10 police personnel have been suspended in Kanpur over their involvement in the Kanpur encounter case. Ten police constables have been sent to Chaubeypur Police Station from the reserve police lines to replace the suspended cops.

Kanpur IG Mohit Aggarwal had said that the Chaubeypur police station is under suspicion. Even some personnel who were earlier posted at Chaubeypur and are no longer working at the police station have also come under scanner. All of these personnel have either helped or benefited from Vikas Dubey over time.

It is now slowly being discovered that the number of people who helped Vikas Dubey within the police department is constantly rising.

More than 200 policemen from the Chaubeypur, Bilhaur, Kakwan, and Shivrajpur police stations are on the radar. Mobile call records of all these personnel are also being investigated.

Inspector KK Sharma, who is investigating the Kanpur encounter case, has said that on July 2 at 4 pm, Vikas had threatened the police over the phone. He had told the police that if the matter escalates, then many will die in the Bikaru village.

The inspector said he was stunned by Vikas Dubey’s threat.

Station Officer (SO) Chaubeypur, Vinay Tiwari, sub-inspectors Kunwarpal and Krishna Kumar Sharma and constable Rajiv were suspended for their alleged involvement in passing on information to Dubey about police movement.

Meanwhile, a 2017 video of Dubey has gone viral on social media in which he suggested he was close to local politicians including some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs.

The video was allegedly shot while Dubey was being interrogated by the Uttar Pradesh STF in 2017 after his arrest from Krishna Nagar.

In the clip, Dubey claims to have close links with two local BJP MLAs, Bhagwati Sagar and Abhijeet Sanga and the chief of the Zila panchayat.

He also claims in the video that Sagar and Sanga had helped him in the past when he faced police action.

However, both the BJP leaders denied having any links with Dubey.
