Here’s what CBSE says about deleting topics like democracy, citizenship, and federalism

The Central Board of Secondary Education has released an official answer about topics deleted for classes nine-12 for the acadmic year 2020-21.

CBSE Board reduced 30 per cent of the syllabus from classes nine to 12. This has created quite a spur in the country as the media has quoted topics like democracy, citizenship, and federalism are deleted. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to express how shocked she is feeling after listening to this news.

As the speculations against the board are on rife, the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) released an official notification to clear the air. “The schools have also been directed to follow the Alternative Academic Calendar prepared by NCERT for transacting the curriculum. Therefore, each of the topics that have been wrongly mentioned in media as deleted has been covered under Alternative Academic Calender of NCERT which is already in force for all the affiliated schools of the board,” said the notification.

As the changes made in the syllabus are temporary due to the current situation of the coronavirus outbreak, “the board has clarified that no question shall be asked from the reduced syllabus in the board exams 20-21 only,” mentioned the notification.

CBSE is not the only board to have reduced the syllabus. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) have had also reduced its syllabus much before the CBSE boards. “The rationalisation of upto 30% syllabus has been undertaken by the board for nearly 190 subjects of class nine to 12 for the academic session 2020-21 as a one-time measure only.

The objective is to reduce the exam stress of students due to the prevailing health emergency situation and preventing learning gaps,” said the notification.
