The Hathras gangrape case in Uttar Pradesh may have a direct impact on Assembly polls in the neighbouring state of Bihar. India Today TV has learnt that Congress Party is considering not to give tickets to those candidates who have pending cases of crime against women. The candidate selection panel of the party has put on hold three names who have pending cases of serious crimes against women. Party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) will take a final call on these names.

India Today TV has learnt from reliable sources that at least three names have been put on hold by the Congress Party’s panel entrusted with shortlisting candidates for Bihar polls. ‘In view of the growing outrage over the Hathras case, we have withheld three candidates who have serious charges of crime against women pending,’ said senior party leader. The decision is a direct fall out of the party’s high pitch campaign against Yogi Government over the Hathras gangrape case.

Interestingly, at a presser on Tuesday over Hathras gangrape case, Party’s women Wing chief Sushmita Dev had expressed deep reservations over allocating party ticket to those facing charges of crime against women. Her statement has come just ahead of party’s official list of candidates due to be released soon.

India Today TV has reported earlier that Congress is contesting on 70 seats out of a total of 243 Assembly Constituencies in Bihar as part of the grand alliance or the ‘Mahagathbandhan’. Party’s CEC which met on Monday has shortlisted 46 names and sent for approval from Congress President.
