Noida Police are probing a case where a private company employee has alleged that he is being blackmailed by someone who has threatened to post an intimate video of him on social media. This is the first case where the term ‘online rape’ has found mention in an FIR in an Indian police station.

The matter first came to light when a case was registered in this regard by the private company employee at Noida Sector 39 police station. An executive employed by a leading finance company with offices in Noida, the complainant alleged that a girl he befriended through an online dating app is blackmailing him.

In his complaint, the executive said he registered on ‘Woo Online Dating App‘ a few months back. He then received a friend request from a girl and the two started talking to each other.

A resident of Noida Sector 37, the complainant claims the girl asked him to shoot an intimate video of himself during a video chat conversation between the two. He then received a call a few days later from someone who threatened to post his intimate video on social media if he failed to pay a ransom.

The executive claims that he has already paid a ransom of Rs 5,000 to the blackmailers who are now demanding Rs 50,000. He goes on to allege that the blackmailers have also threatened to accuse him of ‘online rape’ owing to cyber laws in India which criminalise indecent exposure in front of women or children through a digital medium.

Noida Police have registered a case on the basis of the executive’s complaint under relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act. Help is also being sought from the police’s Cyber Cell wing to probe the case.
