Bigg Boss Tamil Season 4 premiere: Kamal Haasan adds some color to grim 2020

Kamal Haasan is back with his most popular reality show, Bigg Boss Tamil. After three successful seasons, Season 4 is all set to entertain the audience once again. If not for the pandemic, the fourth season of Bigg Boss Tamil would have been aired in July.

The grand premiere, which was aired on Sunday on Star Vijay, kickstarted on an emotional note. Kamal Haasan spoke to health and frontline workers, virtually, who were instrumental in fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic. They shared some heartwrenching stories that they experienced in the last few months and explained the importance of taking precautionary measures.

One of them, whom Kamal Haasan spoke to, was a volunteer who helped the public to cremate coronavirus infected patients. They also arranged ambulances to transport bodies of Covid-19 patients to their native places free of cost. Kamal Haasan praised them for their tireless efforts and said how they play an important role in these times of despair.

Unlike previous seasons, the premiere of Bigg Boss Tamil 4 hosted by Kamal Haasan didn’t have a live audience.

Kamal Haasan said that the showrunners have followed safety protocols to ensure a Covid-free environment. He appreciated the technicians behind the show and gave us a glimpse of how they are shooting it adhering to government rules and restrictions.

The grand and colourful Bigg Boss house

Without waiting much, Kamal Haasan took his fans and viewers on a virtual tour of Bigg Boss house and pointed out the changes compared to the earlier seasons. This time, the house, has been created based on the pop art theme in a motive to make the viewers and contestants’ life brighter, happier, and cheerful.

To start with, this is the first time that the show will celebrate Diwali, Christmas, New Year, and other festivals during its run. The garden area, the entrance, the washroom, the bedrooms, the living room, and the kitchen looks bright and colorful.

The Jail, inside the Bigg Boss house, had always been a point of discussion with the housemates. This time, too, the Bigg Boss house has a jail. But it’s completely different from the one the audience had witnessed so far.

One of the most important changes in Season 4 is that the entire house will not be available for use to the housemates during the first few days.

Contestants of Bigg Boss Tamil Season 4

Kamal then kicked off the fourth season of the show by introducing the first contestant Rio Raj. He started off his career as a video jockey and shot to fame with popular television series Saravanan Meenatchi, which was also aired on Star Vijay. He was given a warm send-off by his wife Shruti.

Rio Raj confessed to Kamal Haasan that he is afraid of this reality show and that’s one of the reasons why he agreed to be a part of the show.

The second contestant was actress Sanam Shetty. The model-turned-actress was recently in the news for her relationship with Tharshan Thiagarajan, a popular contestant of Bigg Boss 3.

Rekha, a popular actress in the 80s, entered the house next. She has also shared screen space with Kamal Haasan in hit films like Gunaa and Punnagai Mannan. Veteran actress Urvashi, a good friend of Rekha, spoke to her over video call and wished her luck.

The fourth contestant in the house was Bala, a model and fitness enthusiast. He won Mr. International India in 2018 and Mr. Perfect Body in 2017.

Then came Anitha Sampath, a popular news anchor, and daughter of writer RC Sampath. She was visibly happy to be associated with Bigg Boss and to have met Kamal Haasan, her inspiration and idol. Kamal Haasan, while introducing her, told that he would suggest few books every week for the audience to keep them engaged during the pandemic.

Model-turned-actor Shivani Narayanan was the next contestant. She earned a name for herself for her performance in the Tamil serial Rettai Roja.

Jithan Ramesh, who has been part of films like Osthe and Jithan, was welcomed by Kamal Haasan as the seventh contestant. He is the elder brother of actor Jiiva and son of popular producer RB Choudary. Ramesh told Kamal Haasan that the pandemic and the lockdown has forced him to take up Bigg Boss.

Jiiva spoke to him over video call and wished him success for the show.

Singer Velmurugan was the next contestant. He who shot to fame with folk songs like Madura in Subramaniapuram and Aadungada in Naadodigal and the recent Otha Sollala in Aadukalam.

Velmurugan entertained his housemates with a song on the very first day. Anitha Sampath requested him to sing at least once a day and keep them happy.

Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan also launched Star Vijay’s new channel, Star Vijay Music. He made a request to the channel to come up with shows that throw light on the independent musicians, who are waiting for that much-needed recognition.

Aari Arjunan, a social activist and actor, entered the house as a ninth contestant. He is known for his performance in films – Nedunchaalai and Maya. Rekha welcomed him into the house with warmth and love.

We then saw Somasekhar, an aspiring actor and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) expert. He introduced himself to the housemates.

The 11th contestant in the house was Gabriella Charlton. She started her career in television at the age of nine by appearing in a dance reality show. Before entering the house, Gabriella told Kamal that she played Shruti Haasan’s sister in a film titled 3.

Talented stand-up comedian Aranthangi Nisha has entered the house next. She is one of the most popular faces on a small screen and a product of Star Vijay.

Ramya Pandian entered the show next with a scintillating performance. She made her debut with the critically-acclaimed film, Joker, directed by Raju Murugan. However, the actress became the talk of the town after a few of her sizzling photoshoot pictures made its way to the internet last year.

The other contestants who entered the house were model-entrepreneur Samyuktha, actor Suresh Chakravarthy and Super Singer fame Aajeedh. Bigg Boss Tamil Season 4 has a total of 16 contestants this year.

The grand premiere episode was aired for more than four hours, and it was a tad slow. However, this time, the BB house has a blend of commoners and celebrities from various walks of life which might make this season an entertaining watch. The contestants who stood out in the premiere episode were Rio Raj, Somsekhar, and Shivani Narayanan. The ones who also seem to have potential are Anitha Sampath and Ramya Pandian.

Kamal Haasan concluded the show by speaking about how Covid-19 crisis has taken away the jobs of many people. He stressed on the fact that it is time to get back to work. Kamal Haasan also revealed that there is no elimination in the first week of the show.
