Assam: CID arrests chief secretary’s brother in connection with police recruitment scam

CM Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the CID to probe the leak of the question paper for the recruitment of sub-inspectors to the Assam Police.

Assam police on Thursday arrested a Superintendent of Police, who is also the brother of the state’s top bureaucrat. The arrest of Kumar Sanjit Krishna was made in connection with the leak of the question paper for the recruitment of Sub Inspector (UB) to the Assam Police.

Posted as SP at Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Assam’s Barpeta district, Kumar Sanjit Krishna was arrested by the CID on Thursday evening. He is the brother of Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna.

Prior to his posting at the FRRO in Barpera, Kumar Sanjit Krishna served as the Superintendent of Police (SP), Karimganj district.

The arrest was made in connection with case number 21/2020 registered at the CID police station. According to inputs, the written examination for recruitment to 597 posts of SI (UB) in Assam police was scheduled for September 20 of this year.

This examination was cancelled after the question paper was leaked through WhatsApp.

Following the leak, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the state police to conduct a thorough probe into the matter. The CM had specified that no one found guilty will be spared.

Assam Police have so far arrested more than 50 people, including a former DIG Prasanta Kumar Dutta and expelled BJP leader Diban Deka in connection with the leak. Investigators have also recovered cash amounting to more than Rs 6 crore and gold ornaments from the homes of some of the accused.
