Increasing accessibility and affordability of healthcare in India through medtech innovations – ET HealthWorld

By Anish Bafna

Over the past few years, India has emerged as a leading hub for medical technology and innovation. The healthcare system faces numerous challenges in providing accessible and affordable care to a diverse population. To increase accessibility and affordability, there is an urgent need to invest in identifying the unique gaps in our market and solving them with an innovative mindset.

The surge in medtech development has the unique potential to transform healthcare in the country by improving accessibility, affordability, and quality of healthcare services. The industry is constantly examining specific medtech innovations and evaluating their impact on the healthcare system. It is critical for companies to delve into the importance of understanding local needs, fostering innovation within India, and analysing successful examples of local medtech interventions.

As the fourth largest medical device market in Asia and ranked among the top 20 markets worldwide, India’s sunrise sector is well poised for a quantum leap. In order to scale new heights and fulfil the growth potential, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Medtech companies are adopting smarter ways to build the future through collaborations by effectively harnessing digital tools and creating a strong, resilient foundation for growth.

Innovation in medical technology and the med-devices sector has created a wide portfolio of products, including a range of precision medical devices, surgical instruments, OT equipment, haemostats, arthroscopic and shoulder implants, and consumables in the fields of orthopaedics, sports medicine, and chronic wound care. The industry is working closely with its customers, including hospitals, clinics, and medical professionals, to understand the specific needs and requirements of patients.

Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Implants: Sports medicine is a relatively new discipline in India with a huge prospect in terms of growth. Innovative solutions and patented designs are today enabling better clinical outcomes for athletes. The surgical and non-surgical implants are accompanied with precision deployment, which facilitates faster and more secure repair for injuries. Newer, minimally invasive surgical techniques are set to boost the sports medicine market today. The healing methods mostly include non-surgical, holistic options like medication and physiotherapy.

Advanced Woundcare and Infection Prevention Segments: The treatment of wounds and the prevention of hospital-acquired infections have undergone a paradigm shift as a result of new discoveries and patented technologies that aid in the reduction of infections. These infections are typically linked to the chronicity of the wounds and prolonged hospital stays, which can raise therapy costs as well as the risk of mortality. These advanced solutions will not only promote faster recovery but also will protect against nosocomial infections.

3D-Printed Prosthetics and Medical Devices: 3D printing technology allows for the production of customizable prosthetics and medical devices at a fraction of the cost of traditional manufacturing methods. This innovation has the potential to make essential medical equipment more accessible and affordable for patients in need across India. The market for 3D printing in healthcare and medtech is growing. In addition to medical devices, 3D printing technology is also being deployed to create tissues and organs for medical use.

Telemedicine and Virtual Clinics: Telemedicine enables doctors to diagnose and treat patients remotely through video consultations or phone calls. This technology can significantly increase accessibility to healthcare services by providing virtual services, particularly for people living in rural areas that lack proper medical facilities. The technology can also make healthcare more affordable by reducing transportation costs and the need for physical infrastructure.

Point-of-Care Diagnostics: Point-of-Care diagnostics devices allow medical professionals to perform tests at a patient’s bedside, minimising the need for samples to be sent across to centralised diagnostic laboratories. This can save valuable time and resources while providing faster results for patients. POC diagnostics can greatly benefit rural populations with limited access to advanced medical facilities.

AI-Powered Diagnostics: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionising healthcare by automating diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and risk prediction. AI-powered diagnostic tools can analyse numerous parameters such as medical images, lab results, and patient history to provide faster and more accurate diagnoses than traditional diagnostic methods, making them a cost-effective solution.

Electronic Health Records: EHRs enable the digital storage of patient data that is easily accessible by authorised healthcare providers across different institutions. This helps optimise treatment by reducing administrative hassle, avoiding redundant tests, and ensuring that healthcare providers have a complete medical history for accurate decision-making, thus making healthcare more affordable.

Finally, to conclude, the adoption and integration of these medtech innovations have the potential to drastically improve the accessibility, affordability, and quality of healthcare in India. Policymakers and private players should work together to invest in these technologies, ensure their widespread implementation, and address other challenges like infrastructure, skill development, digital connectivity, and regulatory policies to create a robust healthcare system for all.
