136 Congressmen and 30 Senators seek reversal of US decision on international students

  • In separate letters to Acting Secretary, Department of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf and Acting Secretary, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Matthew Albence, the lawmakers expressed concern over the ICE’s recently announced modifications to the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP).
  • In its July 6 order, the ICE declared that nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online or taking only online courses will not be permitted to take a full course load and remain in the United States.
  • The modifications also limited many students at normally operating schools from taking more than one class or three credit hours online in order to remain in the country.

IMF and World Bank to hold fall meetings virtually

  • The IMF and World Bank Group announced Thursday that their annual fall meetings will be mostly virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva and WBG president David Malpass said they will be “flexible with the format of the meetings in light of developments.”
  • “Our goal is to serve our membership effectively while ensuring the health and safety of Annual Meetings’ participants, staff, and the local community in the Washington DC area,” they said in the statement.

India’s Reliance to load Venezuelan oil cargo under fuel swap deal

  • India’s Reliance will load its first cargo of Venezuelan crude in three months this week in exchange for diesel under a swap deal the parties say is permitted under the U.S. sanctions regime on the Latin American country, according to a Reliance source and a shipping document from state oil firm PDVSA.
  • Washington has exempted some Venezuelan oil trade from sanctions, when transactions are in exchange for fuel and food or to repay debts rather than for cash.
  • But that trade slowed as the U.S. tightened restrictions and refiners, shippers and insurers have been steering clear of Venezuela to avoid any risk they may fall foul of sanctions.

Odisha govt reduces “Special Covid Fee” on liquor from 50% to 15%

  • The Odisha government has slashed the “Special Covid Fee” of 50 per cent of MRP on alcoholic beverages to 15 per cent.
  • In a statement, the state excise department said only 15 per cent “Special Covid Fee” would be charged on MRP of various liquor including beer and wine instead of the earlier rate of 50 per cent.
  • The ‘Special Covid Fee’ helped the Odisha government to generate revenue of Rs 200 crores

US posts new record daily caseload of more than 65,000

  • The US on Thursday posted 65,551 new coronavirus cases, a record for a 24-hour period, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
  • The country, the hardest-hit in the world by the pandemic, has a total caseload of more than 3.1 million, with 133,195 deaths.
  • The previous daily record was Tuesday, at more than 60,200 cases in one day.

Trudeau family paid by charity at heart of ethics probe: report

  • The charity at the heart of an ethics investigation targeting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid members of his family for speaking engagements, Canadian media reported Thursday.
  • WE Charity paid Margaret Trudeau, the prime minister’s mother, Can$250,000 (US$184,000) for speeches at 28 events between 2016 and 2020, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
  • The revelation seemed “to contradict WE Charity’s earlier claim that it had ‘never paid an honorarium’ to Margaret Trudeau,” the public broadcaster said in a report on its website.
  • WE Charity paid Justin Trudeau’s brother Alexandre $32,000 for his participation in eight events, the CBC reported.

China reports 4 new cases in mainland

  • China reported four new coronavirus cases in the mainland for July 9, down from nine a day earlier, the health authority said on Friday.
  • All four of the new infections were imported cases, according to a statement by the National Health Commission.
  • China also reported three new asymptomatic patients, compared with six such cases a day earlier.

Bolivian president has COVID-19 as virus hits region’s elite

  • Bolivia’s interim president and Venezuela’s No. 2 leader announced Thursday that they have been infected with the new coronavirus, just days after Brazil’s leader tested positive as the pandemic hits hard at some of Latin America’s political elite.
  • Three Cabinet ministers in the administration of Bolivian leader Jeanine Anez have also tested positive for the virus, including Health Minister Eidy Roca and Presidency Minister Yerko Nunez, who is hospitalized.
  • The infections in Venezuela, Brazil and Bolivia, which is seeing a spike in cases, come after Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez tested positive in June and was briefly hospitalized.
