View: Congress must rediscover its core purpose, replace rhetoric with politics of pro-people action

Along time ago, Congress inspired millions to fight for freedom, not because it could distribute money or positions to volunteers, but because its goals and ideals resonated with the people.


It is necessary for such a party to oppose majoritarian politics and the Sangh Parivar, and bring likeminded parties, particularly breakaway groups of Congress, together on a platform, but not sufficient.

A change of leadership will not fundamentally alter the fortunes of the Congress party, unless it is accompanied by a focus on redefining its purpose and politics. The letter written by 23 senior party leaders is a step in the direction of reform, but does not go far enough. India today needs a party that stands for the democratic ideals of the Constitution, has a plan to realise them and works to implement the plan relentlessly. It is necessary
