Strike rate matters, not seats: BJP Tamil Nadu logic

The BJP campaigns in Tamil Nadu for the last few months indicated that the party has big plans for the state. However, within the alliance with AIADMK, BJP is contesting 20 seats and has got one Lok Sabha seat of Kanyakumari.

The party leaders told ET that at this juncture, it is important for the party is to defeat the DMK-led alliance in the state. For the expansion plan, the party has formed booth committees in 52,000 booths out of the 92,000 in the state.

“Don’t go by the number of seats we are contesting. Our strike rate will be more than 50 per cent and we will be winning more than 10 seats,” CT Ravi, BJP in-charge of the state told ET. “We have got seats in every region of the state and that shows our presence and organisational strength.” Currently, BJP has no representation in the Tamil Nadu assembly.

After tough negotiations with the AIADMK, the party has ensured to get the 20 seats of its choice. AIADMK had to part with two seats where it had sitting MLAs. BJP has got two Coimbatore South and Madurai North seats, which were won by AIADMK in 2016. AIADMK had to shift its two sitting MLAs to different constituencies because of giving these seats to the ally BJP.

Kanyakumari is going to be the centre of the BJP’s campaign as the party is not only contesting the Lok Sabha bypolls but also three of the six assembly constituencies under it.
