Social media sentiments don’t translate into election results: Analysis

MUMBAI: Social media chatter and sentiments don’t translate into on-ground results in events like elections in India, finds a latest report by Checkbrand, said an ADG Online-funded online sentiment analysis company.

As per the analysis of data on social media for the last one month, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav was growing in popularity on social media ranking. Over 28% people had high positive sentiments for Yadav, whereas around 19% people had negative sentiments about the former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son. The sentiments were quite high in the third and fourth week of October.

On the other hand, chief minister Nitish Kumar’s positive sentiment analysis was at an all-time low of 5%, while his negative sentiment analysis was at an all-time high of 20%.

Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi’s positive sentiment analysis was at a dismal 3% and negative sentiments at a high of 15%. Prior to elections, the senior BJP leader was faring even worse.

However, online sentiments have not resulted in a victory for Yadav’s RJD or the MGB (Maha Gath Bandhan), and NDA seems to be forming the government in the assembly once again.

Speaking on the analysis, Anuj Sayal, managing director, ADG online, said, “Checkbrand analysed more than 30 million impressions on social media to come to this conclusion. Everyone heavily depends on the followers on the social media handles to gauge the sentiment about a celebrity or a brand.”

Among the people digitally analysed by Checkbrand, 78% were male and 22% female, 51% were in the 25-34 year age bracket.

About 43% of discussions showed that they were expecting the government to create more jobs, 16% were looking for special status for the state of Bihar, 9% expected setting up industry, 6% wanted alcohol ban and 11% were looking for other expectations.

Checkbrand uses algorithmic calculations like digital presence, engagement, reach, mentions, sentiment analysis, online reputation, digital impact, blogs, news, digital ranking, social media ranking, competition analysis and media monitoring to create ranking for a person or brand.
