New York: Tibetan community stage protest against China outside Chinese consulate

  • Members of the Tibetan community on Friday staged a protest against China outside the Chinese Consulate in New York.
  • Demonstrators raised anti-China slogans and were seen waving the Indian and US flags. They were also seen holding a banner reading ‘Global Movement to Boycott Made in China’.
  • Last week, Indian American, Taiwanese Americans and Tibetans demonstrated against China at the iconic Times Square in New York.
  • The protests come in the aftermath of the deadly border clash in the Himalayas that left 20 Indian soldiers dead and 76 injured.

China, India stand very differently at UN: Akbaruddin

  • India’s former permanent representative at the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin on Saturday said countries like China and India stand very differently at the UN, in terms of their perspective and approach.
  • Akbaruddin was speaking during an online interaction with the Vice-Chancellor and other faculty members of the University of Hyderabad, his alma mater.

US warns of ‘arbitrary detention’ risk in China

  • US citizens in China “may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention for reasons related to ‘state security'”, the State Department warned in a security alert.
  • Beijing and Washington have traded barbs and sanctions on a slew of issues in recent months, including the coronavirus pandemic and Chinese policies in the far west regions of Tibet and Xinjiang, with Chinese authorities threatening retaliation this week for US sanctions on Chinese officials.

Agency reports said some boats from Pangong Lake in eastern Ladakh had also been removed but this could not be confirmed.
