How an Indian-origin graduate got Tesla job after 5 months of cold emailing, 300 applications and 10 interviews

Dhruv Loya, an Indian-born Biomedical Engineering graduate, recently announced on LinkedIn that he landed his dream role as a Powerwall Technical Support Specialist at Tesla after a rigorous five-month job search. Originally from Pune, India, Mr Loya described his journey as challenging yet rewarding, sharing the extensive efforts he made in securing a position at the electric vehicle giant.

Navigating through challenges

In his LinkedIn post, Mr. Loya disclosed the intense challenges he encountered, including sending over 300 job applications and 500 cold emails, and participating in 10 interviews. Despite his strong academic performance, internships, and extracurricular achievements, he experienced a prolonged period of unemployment. “I finally got a job!” he shared in his post, describing his persistence in a competitive job market.

Financial and personal struggles

Loya faced several personal setbacks, including financial strain, a lost lease, and the added pressure of uncertain visa status. During this time, he relied on friends for accommodation and often stayed on air mattresses. Despite these challenges, he maintained a positive outlook, treating his job search as a full-time commitment by dedicating his weekdays to applications and reserving evenings and weekends for self-care.

Resourceful job search strategy

To maximize his job search, Loya utilized multiple online platforms, including LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake, and Jobright.ai. He also explored Hunter.io for cold emailing and ChatGPT+ for resume and cover letter assistance. His past experience spans internships at CoreHaptics, Boehringer Ingelheim, and the University at Buffalo, where he graduated with a 3.4 GPA in May 2024.

A message of hope for job seekers

Now based in New York, he is eager to embark on his Tesla journey, hoping his story can inspire others facing similar challenges in the job market.
