Haryana Congress reshuffle on cards? Surjewala says ‘unaware’, cautions against confusion

Amid speculation of an organisational revamp in Haryana Congress, the party’s senior leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on Saturday said he was unaware about any such change but advised there should not be a “situation of confusion” as it was against the party’s health.

Surjewala’s remarks come amid reports that the Congress leadership was looking to effect changes in the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC).

At present, Kumari Selja is its president while former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is the Congress Legislature Party leader in the state Assembly.

“Being a Congress worker, I am also worried that there should not be a ‘bhram ki sathiti’ (situation of confusion). That is against the organisation’s health,” Surjewala said in response to a question about the possible party rejig in the state.

“I am confident that Sonia Gandhi ji will soon clear this situation and it is only a matter, may be, of few days,” he added.

Asked if the Congress was worried about the Aam Aadmi Party’s rise, Surjewala said, “Every political party needs to act on three principles –strengthening its own ideology, building its own organisation and propagating its own idea. And if you are confident about these three, you need not worry about other things. First, we need to look within than look outside.”

The senior Congressman slammed the AAP government in Punjab for sending police to the residence of party leader Alka Lamba in Delhi.

The Punjab Police had on April 20 visited homes of former AAP leader Kumar Vishwas and Congress’ Alka Lamba in connection with a case registered over “inflammatory statements” against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

“Is it right to send 20 cops to the residence of a woman? Is it not misuse of power,” he asked and said no case had been registered in Punjab against Lamba, but alleged the Bhagwant Mann-led regime of indulging in political vendetta.
