Election-bound states focus of organisational Changes in BJP

Apart from changing chief ministers, BJP has also reshuffled its organisational structure in election-bound states.

Over a month ago, Ratnakar (former joint general secretary in Bihar BJP) was appointed general secretary of the party’s Gujarat unit. He replaced Bhikhu Bhai Dalsania, the longest serving leader on the post. Dalsania was general secretary (organisation) from 2005 to 2021 and was the go-to man of every important BJP leader from Gujarat. Dalsania has now been moved to Bihar.

Uttarakhand governor Baby Rani Maurya’s resignation is important in BJP’s scheme of things. A Dalit leader, who had been Agra mayor and a social activist, is most likely to be roped in by the party in Uttar Pradesh.

Major reshuffle in the organisation took place in November last year. The tried-and-tested leaders, with good election experience, were roped in to handle key states. Thus, Radha Mohan Singh was made UP incharge, Bhupender Yadav Gujarat’s and Arun Singh Karnataka’s.

Some new faces have also been roped in as incharges — CT Ravi of Goa, Dushyant Gautam of Uttarakhand and Punjab, Vinod Sonkar of Tripura, Avinash Rai Khanna of Himachal Pradesh and Sambit Patra of Manipur.

With Bhupender Yadav, Sudhir Gupta was appointed as co-incharge of Gujarat. Gupta has also been made the election incharge of Kanpur region in UP.

In UP, three co-incharges — Satya Kumar, Sunil Oza and Sanjeev Chaurasia — were appointed under Radha Mohan Singh. Kumar and Oza, who are considered close to Modi, are known for their election management skills. In fact, Satya Kumar gets appointed in every crucial state going to elections.

In January this year, former bureaucrat in the PMO, Arvind Kumar Sharma, was introduced to UP’s BJP unit without much fanfare. Sharma, now an MLC, is touring the state collecting feedback for the party.

Uttarakhand BJP president was changed in March this year, with Madan Kaushik replacing Bansi Dhar Bhagat. In June, BJP appointed Sharda Devi as new Manipur BJP chief after S Tikendra Singh succumbed to Covid-19 in May.
