Charanjit Singh Channi to become Punjab’s new chief minister

Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi has been announced as the next chief minister of Punjab on Sunday after day-long deliberations.

“It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. #CharanjitSinghChanni has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab,” former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat tweeted.

Channi was serving as Punjab cabinet minister for technical education and industrial training, employment generation, and also science and technology.

The Congress leader was born in the village Makrona Kalan near Chamkaur Sahib. Later in his life his family settled in Kharar, where he was the municipal councilor for three terms and moved on to become the President for two more.

He was furthermore elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the first time in 2007. Channi was able to repeat the success in the 2012 and 2017.

News of Channi’s appointment by the Congress comes as a surprise after media reports pointed at outgoing minister Sukhjinder Randhawa being picked for the top post.

Captain Amarinder Singh stepped down as Punjab CM on Saturday by saying he ‘felt humiliated’ after months of tussles with with Punjab Congress.
