CBI registers 9 FIRs related to Bengal post-poll violence

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered nine FIRs in connection with the post-poll violence in Bengal, people with direct knowledge of the matter have said.

The cases were registered after the West Bengal Police shared details of alleged rape and murders that took place in the state after the assembly election results were announced.

The agency is likely to register more FIRs if more cases are presented by the West Bengal Police. Last week, the agency had written to the Director General of Police (DGP), Bengal, seeking details of all such cases pertaining to the post-poll violence.

One of the nine cases registered by the CBI is the alleged murder of Avijit Sarkar. The CBI officials on Thursday recorded the statement of the mother of the deceased at their residence in Beliaghata area in Kolkata. They also went around the area of the incident.

The whole process was videographed. Biswajit Sarkar, the brother of Avijit Sarkar, had presented all case-related documents and video evidence at the CBI office on Wednesday.

The CBI had asked Avijit’s brother to identify the three officers of Kolkata Police Homicide Department, who had allegedly told him that they could not initiate a probe against a sitting Trinamool MLA.
