Hathras Police in Uttar Pradesh has arrested four men accused of gang-raping a 19-year-old Dalit woman on September 14. The survivor is currently battling for her life in a hospital in Aligarh where she has been put on ventilator support.

According to a statement by Hathras Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Vir, the teenager had gone to the fields along with her mother on the day of the incident. Family members launched a search when she went missing and found her in a critical state.

There was a serious cut on her tongue indicative of an attempt to strangulate her, the SP added.

Based on preliminary evidence, the police arrested 20-year-old Sandip for the crime.

In her statement to the magistrate soon after, the survivor identified the accused as Sandip, Ramu, Lavkush and Ravi. All of the four are now in police custody.

She is currently undergoing treatment at the JN Medical College hospital in Aligarh. Doctors familiar with the case said the woman had injuries on her neck and her condition is ‘critical’.

The accused had been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and later charged with gang-rape under section 376 D, Hathras ASP Prakash Kumar said. He added that the case will be tried by a fast-track court.

While accusing the police of negligence after meeting the woman’s family members, Congress leader Sheoraj Jiwan claimed she was shifted to Aligarh only after her condition worsened. He also demanded a sum of Rs 20 lakh for the survivor’s kin along with police protection.
