Robotic Technology restores hope for a 60-Day-Old Infant born with kidney ailments – ET HealthWorld

Pune: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Pune hospital, successfully employed advanced robotic technology to preserve the kidney function of a 60-day-old infant born with Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction of the left kidney. The infant suffered from a condition where the flow of urine out of the kidney was blocked, poses a serious threat to the infant’s renal function. Robotic surgery allowed the medical team to operate through three tiny sub-centimetre incisions, offering several advantages over traditional methods.

Dr Geeta Kekre Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic said, “The greatest advantage of the robot was that it allowed us to reconstruct the junction of the kidney and the ureter with greater precision. In such a tiny abdomen, the articulated robotic instruments with their tremor filters and wrist-like movements proved to be a great boon.”

Dr Nandini Londhe, Head of Anaesthesia said, “A well-developed hospital infrastructure is required to carry out such surgeries. Our surgeons, anaesthesiologists and paediatricians work together to ensure that these children get the appropriate surgical care.”

Parents of the Infant were thrilled and chose to remain anonymous, expressing their gratitude towards the entire surgical staff. Earlier, we were very anxious when we learnt that our baby was going to need surgery, but we are very glad that we opted for robotic surgery and trusted the doctor. Our baby is as active and playful as ever and continues to grow well.
